Searching for rear brake backing plates

Beitrag von epowell »

Hello :)

I am searching for new or used Backing Plates for my rear brakes.
My plates have some small rust damage... ...but the main reason I would like to change those backing plates is because last year when I was repairing the rear brakes I had to use a torch on the little nipple that the emergency brake cable goes through... that cable was badly stuck, and when I was heating up that nipple and pulling the cable out, the nipple got damaged >>> the cable still goes through that nipple OK but the emergency brake is still not working properly so I think that somehow that damaged nipple is not allowing the cable to move freely as it should.

Has anyone had this problem before? Here is a pic of that damaged nipple.Bild

Are the cables for the parking brakes/handbrakes the old, which you pulled out after heating the nipple? If the cable can move when operated, then it will not be the reason for malfunction.

Reason for bad function of handbrakes are often the pushrods with the adjuster. If those are not in correct position the handbrake will not work sufficiently or even totally not.
One section from the VW-Service-Manual Running Gear:
Pushrod with sleeve and adjuster
◆ Left rear wheel - right hand thread
◆ Right rear wheel - left hand thread
◆ The chamfer on the sleeve and the longer pin on the pushrod point towards the back plate
Unfall- und störungsfreie Fahrt mit dem VW-Bus

Yes yes, it is these backing plates... They are not available in Czech, but it is nice to know that I can get them in Germany, although they are pretty costly.

I think what I will do for now is to remove them and then take them to a welding shop and have them repaired. . . they are in pretty good condition except for this nipple problem.

Yes the cables were old so I replaced them and still the same problem. But I only replaced to two REAR cables. The FRONT single cable is TERRIBLY OLD (!). I now have a new good one but still I didn't replace it because to do that I must first remove the fuel tank [big job so I will wait until it gets a bit more warm outside]

Here are some fotos of the damage to the backing plates >>> do you think it is possible to repair with welding?

Here is the nipple before heating [it looks like maybe this was welded before also, no?

Here is nipple after heating.

Another problem might be that one of the the adjusting rods is not in good condition... If anyone has some idea about how to get another one - please let me know.
