Veteran status for T3

What are the pros and cons for registering a T3 as a veteran auto in Germany?
Are many T3 owners doing this?

I heard that some advantages are: (for Czech)
1) cheaper insurance
2) State technical and emissions exam every 5 years instead of every 2 years

Disadvantages: (for Czech)
1) all auto parts must be original
2) forbidden to drive on fast highways
3) must be a member of a Veteran Club

Can anyone add some information on this topic? I guess the situation in Czech will be similar to Germany

Hi Ed,

(almost) no disadvantages!

Very cheap insurances.
Standard tax rate, independant from emission class or motor size. Very cheap for old diesels or engines without catalyst but not cheaper than an actual 2 liter non-diesel with catalyst.
Entrance allowed to all cities with emission restrictions.
No restrictions for use compared to "normal" cars.

Needs to be original or modified with parts available 30 years ago and modifications need to have been usual that times, eg. rims (very rough description)
Needs to be in good condition ("worthy of preservation", whatever this exactly means)

No choice for my 1987 T3 with Subaru engine, but perfect for my all original 1982 Mercedes 230 TE

' miss the T3 on your web-pages ;)

As being written already, it's mainly a tax advantage.You can drive everywhere including the Autobahns.No member of an oldtimer club. And don' t worry about the other comments, they don't know what they say.

Hi,
first You have to observe the rules for the verteran Status. I do'nt know an English version of the text.
In my opinion the only advantage is that you can drive in the green labeled "Umweltzone" in german cities (nobody knows how it will be in the future).
Advantage in tax is only low (less than 80,--€(year), if you fit an Oberland cataylytic converter (Oberland-no: 868 972) to your JX-engine. This will result in classification EURO 2 (code 0425). In your case it may be a bit difficult since you have an modified elder T3.
Advantage in insurance depends to your years of crash free driving and your deal with the insurance company.
The veteran status prohibits free modifications to your car.
